Even if you have a normal piercing you can stretch your lobe so you can wear the plugs. In general your ear lobes were pierced with either an 18 or 20 gauge needle. Sizes are marked in gauges down to 00 and as the size increases the number decreases so 00 would be the largest hole. Many piercers will not begin by punching a large hole and removing the plug of skin because it is easier that way. The reason is because if you have a small hole pierced and you stretch it out then decide you want it to be small again its really quite easy to reverse, however when you punch a large hole thats not an option. The best way to stretch your ear lobes is to do it gradually allowing plenty of healing time at each size. Move too fast and you could damage your skin which results in scar tissue and that could make your ear look like the hole is cracking. It also makes it very hard to increase or decrease the gauge. Use stainless plugs or stainless rings for gauging because it isnt porous and it cant absorb bacteria or dirt that might result in infection.
