The weight loss drug Meridia is being pulled off the market in both Canada and the U.S., because of worries about the drug’s links to side effects such as heart attacks and strokes.

Meridia, or sibutramine, was approved in Canada in December, 2000, and in 1997 in the U.S. Since then, both Health Canada and the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. have issued several warnings about the appetite suppressant.

One of the key things to remember about the Atkins diet is its focus on raw, unprocessed foods. The center of diet, as shown by the Atkins diet food pyramid, is fresh vegetables and fresh meats. Added into the mix are natural cheeses, a selection of fruits and, eventually, whole unprocessed grains. There aren’t any packaged meats, canned vegetables or instant anything.  Get more related information at submit articles

There is a reason that the Atkins food pyramid shows these foods in their raw states. There are great health benefits in minimally processed foods. Raw, whole foods retain more vitamins and nutrients than foods that have been through chemical and industrial processing. Manufactured foods are more likely to be tainted with chemical additives that can cause a whole host of problems.

Raw, fresh food ingredients provide the best basis for a healthy diet. Many dieters rely on foods that are technically allowed on the plan, but not good for health. One example is bacon. Many people on the Atkins diet consume lots of bacon. In fact, many use it as a daily part of their protein foods. However, bacon contains high amounts of sodium nitrite, an ingredient that is known to cause cancer. The more bacon they eat, the more they expose themselves to this chemical and many others.

High Glycemic Foods

For people who are diabetes, particularly those who are insulin dependent, a low glycemic index is preferable. These foods allow the insulin or medication to respond better to the blood glucose and allows for the sugars to break down more naturally.

Other foods are rated high on the Glycemic Index. These foods currently have high ratings and raise the blood glucose level quickly. High glycemic foods can be beneficial for people who are recovering from high exertion or those suffering from hypoglycemia. People with Type I or Type II Diabetes should avoid high glycemic foods as they can play havoc with the insulin or medication they are taking.

Some examples of foods that considered high glycemic foods include corn flakes, white rices such as jasmine rice, white breads and baked potatoes. People who have diabetes, either Type I or Type II, should avoid these foods as much as possible.

In an escalation of New York’s war on obesity, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, with the backing of the state, has asked the federal government to bar the city’s 1.7 million food-stamp recipients from using the coupons to buy sodas and other sugary drinks. Bloomberg has already tried to get people to eat healthier through ad campaigns, restrictions on food sold in schools, and an unsuccessful call for a state tax on soft drinks. There are numerous tips available about wärmepumpe. Public health experts say cutting extra sugar is a good idea. But should the government force people to do it by saying “no food stamps for soda”?

Many people use more salt than they are aware of. Maybe because some of us are just used to automatically salting our food unaware if it was salted when being cooked. (If eating out) Reducing your salt intake will also help lower your blood pressure.

A diet high in potassium and low in sodium reduces your blood pressure rise by reducing the effect of adrenaline. If you reduce your sodium intake you must also increase your potassium intake.

There are some vegetables and spices that help control your blood pressure. Many of these are very common vegetables and spices so you may be helping your blood pressure and not even know it.

Onions’ essential oil is very beneficial. If you have two to three tablespoons of this essential onion oil a day, it could help reduce your systolic levels. Tomatoes are also a beneficiary to controlling blood pressure. They are high in GABA, a compound that helps lower your blood pressure.

An overwhelming majority of Albertans support a ban on ads aimed at selling junk food to kids, a recently released survey indicates.

“Alberta’s children have some of the highest exposures to unhealthy food and beverage advertising in the world,” said Dr. Kim Raine, a U of A professor who was involved in the study.

“Research shows marketing has a negative impact on children’s food choices, but food and beverage companies face no barriers in aggressively marketing their products to children.”

Released by the Alberta Policy Coalition for Cancer Prevention, the survey shows over 80% of Albertans support a ban on junk food ads targeted at children.

Food Allergies

Literally, a food allergy is labeled as the adverse immune system response to the food protein. It falls under a different category as compared to the so called adverse reactions as prompted by pharmacologic reactions, food intolerance, and some other toxin related feedbacks.

There are several people who develop an allergic reaction to food. However, the mistake that is often made is that of thinking it is a food allergy. The truth is that only a small percentage of the entire population is affected by such. To set things clearer, the term refers to the abnormal reaction of the body to the food that turns on a different kind of response from the immune system. The symptoms come out as some form of retort. Read more at free article directory

The rest of the characterized abnormal reactions are lactose or milk intolerance, toxic responses, and food poisoning. It is but important for those who are allergic in some kind of food to be able to identify their allergens so they can avoid taking them in. The attacks range from the mild, moderate, up to those that can cause illness, and for the worst part, it may bring about death.

Kraft Foods is the world’s second largest food and beverage company after competitor Nestlé . It also competes with PepsiCo , General Mills  and Kellogg . Although the company manufactures both food and beverages, beverages account for only about 13% of its stock.  We believe that Kraft’s beverages business could see market share gains as the economy improves and consumer spending on premium beverage products increases.

Food allergens are those ingredients which are the culprits for the allergic response. They are typically the proteins that defy the heat of cooking, the intestinal digestive enzymes, or the acid in the stomach. This then leads to their survival that allows them to go over the gastrointestinal lining and then to gain entry to the bloodstream, and finally to target the organs. There is a certain mechanism that it involves and it has something to do with heredity as well as the immune system.

Heredity. There is this fact which points out an individual’s tendency to generate the IgE and studies show that it is inherited. Typically, those people who exhibit food allergies are from lineages with history of allergies. It may not be closely related to food but to other allergens like fur, drugs, feather, or pollens.

In transient Miami Beach, where reputations are made more on flash than tradition, it’s refreshing to see a quirky place like Macaluso’s make it.

It’s in a tough spot — literally. The storefront on a hard-to-reach corner of Alton Road should have doomed the place. Yet, 11 years after opening his upscale Italian-American joint, Michael D’Andrea still draws celebrities and socialites happy to shell out a hundred bucks for homey cooking.

The secret: good, old-fashioned garlic, onions and peppers and plenty of attitude. The only things missing are the red-checkered tablecloths and raffia-wrapped chianti bottles.
